North Korea fired 200 cannon on the island over 1000 results of the Korean People
- North Korea today fired 200 shells on the island of Yeonpyeong Korean border, as many buildings caught fire and many people - including soldiers, were wounded. South Korean troops exchanged fire on the island and placed in the highest alert.

According to South Korea, North Korea fired about 200 artillery rounds on Yeonpyeong island off the western peninsula, the sea border dispute between the two is only 3km. The island has 1300 inhabitants. 2 civilians and 13 soldiers were injured Korea.

Known Korean fighter jets were deployed to the west coast after the incident.

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak convened an emergency security meeting. According to a spokesman for the Korean government, Lee has discussed with ministers and other national security advisor and the ability to respond to this action. But the president also urged officials to "resolve the situation towards reasonable to avoid further escalation."

The news of the shelling caused the Korean won declined lowest within 1 month in the foreign market. The central bank also said South Korea will hold an urgent meeting to assess the possible impact on the market after the shelling.



The incident occurred just after a U.S. envoy was traveling to the region to discuss reports that North Korea is carrying out uranium enrichment, which can be used as fuel in nuclear weapons production.
